FRANK LICHT
The Governor of Rhode Island signed this card marked with the seal of the state,
accompanied by an unsigned 8x10 photograph
Printed Card signed in Ink "Frank Licht" as Governor, 5¼x3¼. Governor's card bearing seal
of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. Accompanied by unsigned photo of
signer (b/w, 8x10). Frank Licht (1916-1987) was elected Governor of Rhode Island
(1969-1973) as a Democrat, upsetting 3-term Governor (and later U.S. Senator) John
Chafee. Licht chose not to run for reelection due to his unpopularity from two decisions: his
levying of the first state income tax in Rhode Island history, as well as a temporary state sales
tax. Following his term as Governor, he sat as an Associate Justice for the Rhode Island
Superior Court. His nephew, Richard Licht, later served as Lieutenant Governor of the state
(1985-1989). Card slightly soiled, with a light paperclip stain at upper edge. Otherwise, fine
condition. Two items.
