FREDERICK G. PAYNE The U.S. senator pens his name in blue ink on this 3x2½ card Signature: “Frederick Payne/ U.S. Senator - Maine/ 1953-1959”, in blue ink, 3x2½. Frederick G. Payne (1904-1978) was an American politician who served as the Republican senator for Maine (1953-1959) and the governor of Maine (1953-1959). After graduating from high school, Payne worked a number of odd jobs while studying at the Bentley School of Accounting and Finance in Boston, Massachusetts, from which he graduated in 1925. Payne then landed a job as a financial manager and chief disbursing officer for the Maine & New Hampshire Theaters Company, before becoming mayor of Augusta (1935-1941). In 1942, he resigned from his post as finance commissioner and budget director for the state of Maine join the U.S. Air Force during World War II. Payne successfully reached the rank of lieutenant colonel. In 1948, Payne was elected governor of Maine, and in 1950 he was reelected. During his time as governor, Payne broadened the Maine Development Commission, initiated a long-range highway modernization program, and created a two-percent sales tax. Fine condition.
