George Payne (1904-1978), a former reporter, businessman and veteran of WWII,
was Mayor of Augusta, Maine from 1935-1941, making an unsuccessful bid
for the Republican nomination for Governor in 1940. After serving as Governor
of Maine (1949-1953), Payne was a Republican U.S. Senator from Maine
(1953-1959). After leaving office, he returned to business and was a Trustee
of the Bentley School of Accounting and Finance. Lightly creased at blank
margins and corners and at upper background. 2¼-inch tear at upper background
nicks forehead. Overall, fine condition.
