HAROLD G. HOFFMAN. TLS: "Harold G. Hoffman" as Governor
of New Jersey, 1p, 8x9½. [Trenton}, 1935
April 6. Sending his autograph to D.A. Darwin, Cookeville, Tennessee.
Hoffman served as Governor from 1935-1938. He was sworn in on January 15,
1935. The Lindbergh kidnapping trial began earlier in January in Flemington, N.J. and Hoffman became nationally known
during the trail. Hoffman's career became entwined with the Lindbergh
case. Aware of lingering questions, and anxious to build a national reputation,
Hoffman tried to have the case reopened. He even gave convicted
kidnapper-murderer Bruno Hauptmann a stay of execution. His interference angered
the public and helped to ruin him politically. Slightly creased.
