Bellmon (born 1921) won a Silver Star as a Marine tank platoon during
World War II, participating in four amphibious landings in the Pacific,
including Iwo Jima. He became Oklahoma's first Republican governor since
statehood, serving 1963-1967 and again 1987-1991 and served two terms in the
US Senate (1969-1981), retiring undefeated. After his political retirement,
Bellmon taught at various universities in Oklahoma before returning to the
