Check signed: "Herbert H. Lehman" as Governor, 9x3½. Albany, New York, 1934 August 10. Check #2622, drawn on the Pay Refund, Spanish War account of the New York Adjutant General's Office, payable to Frederick Bardon for $5.00. Also signed by the Assistant Deputy Comptroller. Endorsed by "Frederick Bardon" and one other. Herbert H. Lehman (1878-1963) the investment banker (Lehman Brothers) and philanthropist, served as New York Lieutenant Governor (1928-1932), Governor (1932-1942) and U.S. Senator (1949-1957). He was New York's first Jewish governor. An early, outspoken opponent of Senator Joseph McCarthy, Lehman remained active politically after leaving the Senate, working to undermine the political clout of Tammany Hall. Lehman also served as Director General of the U.N. Relief and Rehabilitation Agency (1943-1946) and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom (posthumously) in 1963. Lehman college of the City University of New York is named for him. Frederick Bardon (d. 1951) was a Spanish-American War veteran, eligible for a bonus from the State. Light surface creases.
