HERBERT H. LEHMAN
Lehman sends letter regarding a study of the relationship between
Vichy, France and the United States
Typed Letter Signed: "Herbert H. Lehman". 1p. 8½x11, personal
letterhead. New York, New York, 1947 January 30. To: Mr. Alfred Knopf,
Jr. New York, New York. In Full: "Dear Mr. Knopf: I am just in receipt
of your letter of January 29. I appreciate very much your willingness to send me
a set of the proofs of the study of the relationship between the United States
and Vichy, France, up to the assassination of Admiral Darlan. Unfortunately I
have very little knowledge of the facts and data which un-doubtedly will be set
forth in the text, or with the relationship between our country and Vichy,
France, prior to the end of 1942. Under the circumstances I would not feel
qualified in any way to comment on the study and I accordingly feel that I
should not avail myself of your very kind offer to send me a set of advance
proofs. I nonetheless greatly appreciate your willingness to do so. Very
sincerely yours,". Herbert H. Lehman (1878-1963) the investment
banker (Lehman Brothers) and philanthropist, served as New York
Lieutenant Governor (1928-1932), Governor (1932-1942) and U.S.
Senator (1949-1957). Lehman also served as Director General of the U.N.
Relief and Rehabilitation Agency (1943-1946) and received the
Presidential Medal of Freedom (posthumously) in 1963. Alfred Knopf,
Jr. (1918-2009) was a publisher. At the time of this letter he was with his
father's company, Alfred A. Knopf, Inc. Toned at all edges. Lightly creased.
