J. JAMES "JIM" EXON
The long-time Nebraska Governor and United States Senator signed this letter from his office in Washington, District of Columbia
Typed Letter Signed: "JJ Exon" in black ink. 8½x11. One page. United States Senate letterhead. Dated June 18, 1979. In Part: "I appreciated receiving your recent letter / and am pleased to share my favorite quotation / which has been a great source of comfort to me over the years." The letter then includes the Serenity Prayer, now known to be written by Reinhold Niebuhr. J. James "Jim" Exon (1921-2005) never lost an election during his many campaigns. Before he ever ran for office, Exon started his own business, Exon Office Supplies, in 1953. He worked as the company's president until 1971. Incredibly, the first office he ever ran for was Governor of Nebraska, a position he held from 1971-1979. In 1978, he rode his popularity as Governor to the United States Senate, where he served as Senator for three terms from 1979-1997. As a Senator, he focused on fiscal and military defense policy, with one notable exception being the Communications Decency Act (1996), an early attempt to censor internet content that was eventually overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court. The Democrat's moderate stances and fiscal conservatism are his legacy; these stances enabled him to hold onto his elected position campaign after campaign in a traditionally Republican state. Normal mailing creases. Three hole punch impressions on left edge (no tears). Minor tear on bottom right edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
