JAMES A. BEAVER
The Pennsylvania Governor signs his name on a card, and dates it
1888
Printed card signed in ink: "James A. Beaver/July 1888", in
black ink, 4¼x2½. James A. Beaver (1837-1914) served as the Governor
of Pennsylvania from 1887 to 1891. After graduating from college, Beaver
began practicing law, but took a break to volunteer for a local military
company. He served as second lieutenant for the company during the
Civil War, fighting for the Union, and being so well regarded as a leader
that his units were often confused for full time soldiers. After the war ended,
Beaver again pursued law, being elected to the board of trustees of
Pennsylvania State College. He was often asked to run for public office, but
did not do so until 1881, losing to his opponent. Beaver was elected in
1887, and served for one term. Heavily toned. Corners slightly worn. Fine
condition.
