JAMES A. BEAVER
Beaver writes a letter saying he would be glad to be at the first Annual Dinner of the Republican Club, if nothing else comes up
Typed letter signed: "James A. Beaver", in black ink, 7¾x9½. January 22, 1887. Pennsylvania. In part: "My Dear Sir: Your letter of the 21st instant, inclosing an invitation to attend the First Annual Dinner of the Republican Club, on the anniversary of Lincoln's birthday, has been received. It would give me great pleasure, I assure you, to join you in doing honor to the memory of the great man, upon the day which you have fixed". James A. Beaver (1837-1914) served as the Governor of Pennsylvania from 1887 to 1891. After graduating from college, Beaver began practicing law, but took a break to volunteer for a local military company. He served as second lieutenant for the company during the Civil War, fighting for the Union, and being so well regarded as a leader that his units were often confused for full time soldiers. After the war ended, Beaver again pursued law, being elected to the board of trustees of Pennsylvania State College. He was often asked to run for public office, but did not do so until 1881, losing to his opponent. Beaver was elected in 1887, and served for one term. Multiple folds. Corners worn and creased. Surface creases. Heavily toned. Binding holes in left margin. Heavily toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
