JAMES A. BEAVER
A letter from the Governor on Executive Department letterhead to an associate, saying he will be unable to meet for dinner due to prior engagements
Typed letter signed: "James A. Beaver", in black ink, 1 page, 7¾x9½. February 10, 1887. Office of the Governor. Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. In part: "My Dear Sir: Your letter of the 7th instant has been received. I regret to say that it will be impossible for me to join you at the dinner of the Republican Club, to be held on next Saturday evening. My engagements here are such that I will not be able to leave home at that time". James A. Beaver (1837-1914) served as the Governor of Pennsylvania from 1887 to 1891. After graduating from college, Beaver began practicing law, but took a break to volunteer for a local military company. He served as second lieutenant for the company during the Civil War, fighting for the Union, and being so well regarded as a leader that his units were often confused for full time soldiers. After the war ended, Beaver again pursued law, being elected to the board of trustees of Pennsylvania State College. He was often asked to run for public office, but did not do so until 1881, losing to his opponent. Beaver was elected in 1887, and served for one term. Multiple folds. Binding holes on left margin. Tears on binding holes. Toned. Pencil notes (unknown hand). Small tear on top right corner. Light surface creases. Tear on top left fold. Otherwise, fine condition.
