Signature: “James C. Shannon/ Ex Governor of Connecticut”, in black ink, 3½x2. James C. Shannon (1896-1980) is an American politician who was the 77th Governor of Connecticut (1948-1949). Once Shannon graduated high school, he began attending Georgetown University and graduated in 1918. Shannon then enrolled in Yale Law School and completed his LL.B. degree in 1921. In 1923, Shannon began serving as the prosecutor for Bridgeport, Connecticut. He also served on the bench of the Bridgeport City and Juvenile Court (1931-1935). From 1939 to 1948, he was the attorney for the Connecticut Federation of Labor. Shannon served during World War I as an aviator in the U.S. Naval Air Force. Beginning in 1947, Shannon served as the 69th Lieutenant Governor of Connecticut, but when James L. McConaughy, who was governor of Connecticut at the time, passed suddenly, Shannon became governor. Two of the main accomplishments Shannon achieved while in office include raising old-age pension benefits and housing reform. Despite his successes, Shannon was not reelected. After leaving his gubernatorial post, Shannon served on the bench of Connecticut Superior Court (1953-1965) before becoming an associate justice of the Connecticut Supreme Court from (1965- 1966).
