on this typed letter sent to the Governor of Maine
Typed Letter Signed: “J.T. Blair Jr.” in black ink. 7¼x10½. Dated March 13, 1957.
Letterhead from the Governor's office of Missouri. Sent to Governor Muskie, who served as
Governor of Maine from 1955 to 1959. In Full: “Thank you for your letter of May 10
relative to the annual meeting of the National Association of Tax Administrators at
Poland Spring, Maine on June 2 through June 5. / Missouri will have at least one
representative in attendance at the meeting. Mr. Larry Haake, of the State Department of
Income Tax is making arrangements to attend”. James T. Blair, Jr. (1902-1962) was a
Missourian who served the state in a variety of elected positions in the Missouri
House of Representatives (1929-1937), as Lieutenant Governor (1949-1957), and as
Governor (1957-1961). He earned his law degree in 1924 and opened a private practice
before delving into politics. After serving in the House, he returned to his business before
enlisting in the military during WWII. While Governor, Blair supported civil rights
legislation, welfare reform, and budget reviews and sustainability. Just 18 months after
his retirement from politics, he was found dead from carbon monoxide poisoning in a horrific
accident when the gas flowed into his home from his car. Mailing creases. Stamp on verso.
