The 36th Governor of Colorado signs this typed letter in which he informs and admirer
he had granted him with a photograph autographed by him and his wife and provides him
with the requested addresses
Typed Letter Signed: “John A Love” in black felt tip. 7¼x10½. Place: Denver, Colorado.
Date: November 2, 1972. Written on State of Colorado letterhead. Addresses to: Mr. Bill
Geiger. 8816 90th Street, Rock Island, Illinois 61201. In full: “Dear Mr. Geiger: Thank you
for your letter of October 13. The photograph, which has been autographed by Ms. Love and
myself, is here with enclosed in compliance with your request. The addresses you requested are as
follows: Walter W. Johnson, 3313 South Oak, Tempe, Arizona 85281; Stephen McNichols, 17
Crestmoor Drive, Denver, Colorado. Please accept my best wishes for success in building a large
collection. Sincerely, John A. Love.” John Arthur Love (1916-2002) was a United States
attorney and Republican politician who served as the 36th Governor of the State of
Colorado from 1963 to 1973. He acquired a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University
of Denver in 1938 and a Bachelor of Law degree from the University of Denver School of
law in 1941. John also served as a U.S. Navy pilot in World War II for which he was twice
awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. He started a law practice in Colorado Springs after
the war and married Ann Daniels in 1942 with whom he had three children. In 1962 he
defeated incumbent Colorado Governor Stephen L.R. McNichols. In 1973 Love resigned the
governorship to become the nation's first Director of the Office of Energy Policy (“Energy
Czar”) in the administration of U.S. President Richard M. Nixon. Lieutenant Governor John
David Vanderhoof assumed the office of Governor upon Governor Love's resignation. John
Arthur resigned five months later due to the political turmoil in the final days of the
Nixon Administration. He died in Colorado on January 21, 2002. Lightly toned and creased.
