JOHN D. LODGE
7x9¼ inscribed image of the former actor and Republican governor
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To William Stanhope/With all best wishes from/John Lodge". B/w, 7x9¼. John Davis Lodge (1903-1985), the grandson of Henry Cabot Lodge and brother of Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr., was a Republican U.S. Representative from Connecticut (1947-1951), Governor of Connecticut (1951-1955) and U.S. Ambassador to Spain (1955-1961), Argentina (1969-1973) and Switzerland (1983-1985). An unsuccessful candidate for a U.S. Senate seat in 1964, Lodge, an attorney and veteran of WWII, had earlier pursued an acting career. He first appeared on Broadway in 1932, the year he was signed by Paramount Pictures. Lodge made three films for the studio before being lent out to R.K.O, where he made Little Women (1933). He would appear in 21 films between 1932-1940, including several that were shot in Europe. Lodge then returned to Broadway, ending his acting career with the hit play, Watch on the Rhine. Lodge, who was married to Italian-born actress, dancer and choreographer Francesca Braggiotti from 1929 until his death in 1985, is buried in Arlington National Cemetery. Fine condition.
