Typed letter signed: "John Lodge" in blue ink. 1 page, 7¼x10½. Written on personal letterhead. September 14, 1967. Westport, Connecticut. In full: "Dear Mr. Brown: Please excuse this very tardy answer to your letter dated August 8, 1967. By some oversight it was not forwarded to me in Europe. I returned from Spain only a few days ago. I am delighted to know that you support Richard Nixon. Abraham Lincoln was elected President following a whole series of political defeats, Nixon has won five times and lost twice, certainly not a bad batting average. Adam Clayton Powell has never lost an election - yet he cannot take his seat. I do appreciate your friendly and generous comments regarding the manner in which I discharged my responsibilities in the various offices which I have held. It means a great deal to me to know that you feel as you do. I hope that I shall have the pleasure of seeing you some time, either in Florida or in Connecticut. In the meantime, my renewed thanks for your letter and all good wishes, Sincerely". John Davis Lodge (1903-1985), the brother of 1960 Republican Vice Presidential candidate Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr., served Connecticut in the US House of Representatives (1947-1951) and as Governor (1951-1955). A lawyer by profession, Lodge had pursued not only politics, but acting, appearing in a dozen films in the 1930s, including Little Women and The Scarlet Empress. A US naval officer serving as liaison to the Free French fleet during World War II, Lodge finished his career as ambassador to Argentina, Spain and Switzerland. Saul Goodman (1919-2003), a New York business man by day, pursued his love of film and theatre in the evening, making friends with many celebrities. Normal mailing folds.
