JOHN Y. BROWN and PHYLLIS GEORGE
Color image, posed together in the Governor's Mansion
Photograph inscribed and signed: "Michael Robuck -/May God's Blessings/be with you always/Gov. John Y. Brown", "Phyllis George Brown". Color, 8x10. JOHN YOUNG BROWN, Jr. (1933-2022) headed a group of investors who purchased Kentucky Fried Chicken from Col. Harland Sanders for $2 million in 1964, transforming the restaurant from a series of dine-in restaurants to the hugely successful fast food chain. He sold his interest in KFC for $284 million in 1971, investing in several other less successful restaurant ventures but also in professional basketball franchises. He purchased the legendary Boston Celtics in 1978, but sold the team a year later after repeated clashes with General Manager "Red" Auerbach. In 1979, Brown married former Miss America and CBS sportscaster Phyllis George. The couple separated in 1995 and divorced in 1998. Brown, a Democrat, served as Kentucky's 55th Governor (1979-1983). He sought the governorship again in 1986, but lost narrowly in a 3-way Democratic Primary. PHYLLIS GEORGE (b. 1949), chosen Miss America in 1971, became an Emmy-winning sports announcer for CBS, the first woman to cover the National Football League. She was married to John Y. Brown Jr., KFC and sports franchise owner, serving as First Lady while he was Governor of Kentucky (1979-1983). The couple divorced in 1998. She has written several books about the native crafts of her adopted state of Kentucky. She made her movie debut in Meet the Parents (2000) and introduced her own line of skin care products in 2004. Corners slightly creased. Ink note (unknown hand) on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
