KARL F. ROLVAAG
The 31st Governor of Minnesota signs this First Day Cover honoring the International Red Cross centennial

Rolvaag,/ Governor of Minnesota, 1963-    .” First Day Cover honoring the centennial of the International Red Cross. Postmarked Washington, D.C., October 29, 1963. 5¢ stamp affixed, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Addressed to a collector in Alabama. Karl Fritjof Rolvaag (1913-1990) was the former Governor of Minnesota as well as an ambassador to Iceland. Rolvaag graduated from St. Olaf College and then joined the military during World War II. At the conclusion of the war, Rolvaag spent some time in Norway. Upon his return to Minnesota, he joined Minnesota's DFL (Democratic-Farmer-Labor) Party, eventually becoming its leader. Subsequently, he was elected lieutenant governor and after serving for eight years, Rolvaag ran for governor in 1962. After a 139-day recount, he won the closest gubernatorial election in Minnesota history. During his time as governor he helped reform the state's mental institutions and brought the state's junior colleges together under one system. Rolvaag was not reelected in 1966 and after his tenure as governor ended, he was appointed U.S. Ambassador to Iceland in 1967. In 1975, he resigned in order to seek treatment for alcoholism. Rolvaag dedicated much of his remaining years to helping other people struggling with addiction. Light staining on seal flap. Scuffed along verso of seal. Sliced open along top fold.
