On letterhead of the State of Maine, Office of the Governor to Mr. Danny Franklin, Phoenix, Arizona. In full: "Thank you for your letter of October 15th and for your kind remarks. I am enclosing a list of living former Governors of Maine, as requested. I hope you are able to visit Maine in the near future. Best wishes. Sincerely". Accompanied by typed list of six former governors of the state, including Horace A. Hildreth, Frederick G. Payne, Burton M. Cross, Edmund S. Muskie (a U.S. Senator at the time of this letter), Robert N. Haskell and John H. Reed (who was serving in the Department of Transportation in Washington, D.C. in 1973). With unrelated typed, metered mailing envelope from the Office of the Governor. Postmarked Augusta, Maine, December 22, 1975. Lightly creased with folds, not at signature. Fine condition. Kenneth Merwin Curtis (born in 1931) was Governor of Maine from 1967-1975. During his tenure, he chaired the New England Governors' Conference (1969-1970) and was Chairman of the Democratic National Committee (1977). A veteran of the Korean Conflict, Curtis had previously served as Secretary of State of Maine (1965-1966). He was later appointed U.S. Ambassador to Canada (1979-1981) and was President of the Maine Maritime Academy (1986-1994). Three items.
