LESTER G. MADDOX
The controversial former Georgia Governor signs a $50 check to the
Conservative Caucus.
Check signed: "Lester G. Maddox", 6x2¾. Marietta, Georgia, 1983
March 8. Check #329, drawn on his personal account at the Bank of Georgia,
payable to "The Conservative Caucus, Inc." for $50. Entirely filled out
by Maddox. Lester Maddox (1915-2003) was charged with assaulting five
black ministers who tried to eat at his Atlanta Restaurant the day after passage
of the 1964 Civil Rights act. (He was subsequently acquitted by an all-white
jury.) Maddox, who wielded an axe handle as a symbol of his opposition to
desegregation but never actually used it on anybody, did close his restaurant
rather than serve black customers. Maddox was later elected Governor of Georgia
(1967-1971). Prohibited from a second term by Georgia's constitution, he was
elected Lieutenant Governor (1971-1975), often opposing the policies of
his successor as Governor, Jimmy Carter. The year he signed this check, Maddox
was diagnosed with the cancer which would finally claim his life 20 years later.
Ink stamps front and verso. Fine condition. A portion of the screen image has
