LINWOOD HOLTON
The Governor of Virginia signs this letter to a supporter
Typed Letter signed: "Linwood Holton" as Governor, 1p, 7¼x10½. Richmond, Virginia,
1973 October 1. On official letterhead to Danny Franklin, Phoenix, Arizona. In full: "Thank
you for your very nice letter. I am pleased that you enjoyed your tour of Virginia and I hope you
have an opportunity to visit our State again. I am enclosing a picture which I have autographed
for your collection, as well as a biographical sketch and a list of all the living former Governors of
Virginia. [Items not included.] Best wishes. Cordially". Abner Linwood Holton, Jr.
(1923-2021) was the first Republican Governor of Virginia (1970-1974) since
Reconstruction. Holton opposed his Party's "southern strategy" of wooing conservative
Democrats with very conservative policies. He supported court-ordered school desegregation
and sent his own children to a primarily black public school in Richmond. Holton's
son-in-law, DemocratTim Kaine, was elected Governor of Virginia (2006-2010) and US
Senator in 2012. Fine condition.
