Autograph Letter Signed: "Lucius Fairchild" as Commander in Chief, 1 page, 3½x2. National Headquarters, Grand Army of the Republic, Madison, Wisconsin, 1887 March 24. To Miss E.W. Peck, Dorchester, Mass. In full: "I have no letter written by Genl Hooker - I wish I had. You should have it. I never had such a letter." Lucius Fairchild (1831-1896) served with famous Wisconsin "iron brigade" during the Civil War, losing his left arm while leading a charge in the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg. Leaving the service as a brevet brigadier general, Fairchild served Wisconsin as its Secretary of State (1864-1866) and Governor (1866-1872). Later he served as US consul in Liverpool and in Paris, and was US Minister to Spain. He was also Commander-in-Chief of the influential veterans' organization, the Grand Army of the Republic (1887).Lightly creased. Folds, vertical fold touches first "u" in Lucius. Pencil note (unknown hand) at lower blank edge. 6x1-inch shading at upper margin touches letterhead and shaded at blank left vertical edge. Minor separations at blank horizontal folds (all intact). Nicked at left edge.
