(b.1936) was Kentucky's first woman Governor (1984-1987), the first
Southern woman elected Governor in her own right and the only woman U.S.
Governor at the time of her election. Collins, who had previously served as
Clerk of the Kentucky Supreme Court (1975-1979) and the state's Lieutenant
Governor (1979-1983), was noted for her $300 million education reform
package and for bringing record numbers of jobs to Kentucky, some resulting
from attracting Toyota to the state after a trade mission to Japan. Fine
