Typed Letter signed: "Mike Stepovich". 1p, 8½x11. Fairbanks, Alaska, 1973 December 4. On his Attorney at Law letterhead to Danny Franklin, Phoenix Arizona. In full: "Thank you for your very kind letter. I am sorry that at the present time I have no suitable photographs but I am sending along my wife's autograph and my own. In answer to your question concerning living former governors of the Territory of Alaska, former Governor Gruening is living in Washington, D.C. and former Acting-Governor Waino Hendrickson is living in Anchorage. Good health to you also, Mr. Franklin, and a happy holiday season". Accompanied by signature: "Matilda Stepovich", 5x3 card. Staple hole in upper left corner. Otherwise, fine condition. Mike Stepovich (1919-2014), a Republican was the last Territorial Governor of Alaska (1957-1958). He had previously served in both houses of the territorial legislature. Stepovich worked hard to achieve Alaskan statehood. After it was achieved, he unsuccessfully sought a US Senate seat (1958) and the Governor's office (1962). He married Matilda Baricevic in 1947. Mike is of Montenegrin ancestry, Matilda Croatian. Nick Stepovich, one of their thirteen children and a restaurant owner, entered the Alaska House of Representatives in 2003.
