PAUL B. JOHNSON, JR.The 53rd Governor of Mississippi pens his name on this postcard Postcard signed: "Paul B Johnson - Gov. Miss 1964-1968", in black ink, 5½x3¼. Addressed with mailing label to Danny Franklin, Phoenix, Arizona. Partly legible postmark from 1974. The son and namesake of a former Mississippi Governor, Paul Burney Johnson, Jr. (1916-1985) was the Lieutenant Governor of Mississippi (1960-1964) as well as the state's Governor (1964-1968). Johnson graduated from both the University of Mississippi as well as Ole Miss Law School. A Marine Corps veteran of World War II, Johnson followed in the footsteps of his father and began a political career shortly after returning from the South Pacific. Although he started out with moderate political leanings, Johnson soon emerged as a staunch segregationist. However, once he was able to recognize the harmful effects that such an overtly racist stance had on Mississippi's economy, he began to adopt a more neutral position beginning with encouraging his constituents to adhere to the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Mounting tape remnant at bottom center. Postmark shows through lightly at signature. Otherwise, fine condition.
