PHILIP H. HOFF. TLS: "Philip H. Hoff" as Governor of Vermont, 1p, 8½x11. Montpelier, Vermont, 1968 November 14. On letterhead of "State of Vermont/Executive Department" to Mr. Danny Franklin, Sunnyslope, Arizona. In full: "Many thanks for your kind and considerate note from Sunnyslope, Arizona. That sounds like a delightful name for any town. I am sorry I cannot forward any campaign material, since I did not campaign (at least for myself) this fall. I did, however, work for Vice President Humphrey and for our Lt. Governor, John J. Daley, who was seeking to succeed me. Sad to say, both were defeated. Again, many thanks for your note. Sincerely". When Philip Henderson Hoff (born in 1924) was elected to the first of his three terms as Governor of Vermont (1963-1969), he was the first Democrat to win that office since 1854. Hoff, who ran unsuccessfully for U.S. Senate in 1970, returned to the Vermont Senate in the 1980s. The first Democratic Governor to break with President Johnson over the Vietnam War, Hoff campaigned across the country for Robert Kennedy in the 1968 Democratic primaries. He had seen combat aboard a U.S. Navy submarine in WWII. Lightly creased with folds, not at signature. Fine condition.
