REUBEN CHAPMAN
Four months after the Civil War ends, the former Alabama Governor's house will be taken by the U.S. government so he has to move.
ALS: "R. Chapman", 3½ pages, 5x8. Tuscaloosa (Alabama), 1865 August 26. To "Cabaniss". In part: "The time is drawing near when I must make some provision for my family that I am ill at ease. We have been told that our house here will be taken from us by the 1st Oct. My judgement is that we ought to go on our place in Sumter, but to this my family can ill afford so if a house can be procured in Huntsville we think of going there since my information from Bob Smith and others in Mobile discourages a location there...." Reuben Chapman (1799-1882) served as a Democrat representing Alabama in Congress (1835-1847) and Governor of Alabama (1847-1849). He was a delegate to the Baltimore convention that tried to avoid the Civil War. From 1862-1865, Chapman served as a representative of the Confederacy to France. Fragile. Nicked lower edges. Folds. Tears at vertical and horizontal folds affect numerous words. Vertical fold touches "R".
