REUBIN ASKEW
The Florida Governor includes his politically useful middle initials in his
signature.
Signature: "Rubin O'D' Askew," 5x3. Reubin O'Donovan Askew
(1928-2014) served as Democratic Governor of Florida from 1971-1979,
the first governor of that state to serve two full terms (Jeb Bush later
became the second.) He had previously been a member of the Florida State House
of Representatives (1958-1962) and the Florida State Senate (1962). US Trade
Representative under President Carter (1979-1981). Askew had turned down
an offer of the Vice Presidential nomination from George McGovern in 1972.
His own bid for the Democratic Presidential nod in 1984 never gained momentum.
The character of "Freddy Picker" in the novel Primary Colors was based
partly on Askew. Askew retains his mother's maiden name as his middle name. An
Irish name is seldom a liability for a politician. Lightly toned. Adhesive
residue on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
