RICHARD J. HUGHES
Former New Jersey Governor and Chief Justice types letter, signs name
in blue ink
Typed letter signed: "Richard J. Hughes" in blue ink. 1 page,
7¼x10½. Written on personal letterhead. Original envelope included. April 1,
1968. Trenton, New Jersey. In full: "Dear Mr. Lowe, I am sorry I am
late in answering your kind and thoughtful letter of March 13. These words of
encouragement, which are all too infrequent, are deeply appreciated and while we
are encountering in New Jersey many problems, we are doing the very best we can.
I hope that our paths will cross one day. Meanwhile, thanks again for you
thoughtful letter. Sincerely yours". Democrat Richard J. Hughes
(1909-1992) made the climb from New Jersey's federal prosecutor, to
county court judge form 1948-1952, to a superior court judge from 1952-1961. In
1962, Hughes was elected Governor of New Jersey, a position he would hold for
two terms, and then in 1973 was elected New Jersey's Supreme Court Chief
Justice, the only person to have served both positions. A very prominent
national politician, Hughes obtained the 1964 Democratic National Convention to
take place in Atlantic City, New Jersey, as well as was a serious consideration
to be Hubert Humphrey's running mate in 1968. Normal mailing folds. Lightly
toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
