New Jersey Governor responds to complaint about littering
Typed letter signed: "Robert J. Hughes" in blue ink. 2 pages, front and verso, 8½x11. Written on personal gubernatorial letterhead. December 7, 1962. Trenton, New Jersey. In part: "Dear Mr. Russhon: I have your letter of recent date and appreciate the cordial remarks on the beauty of the New Jersey countryside, I share these thoughts with you. I also appreciate your expression of support for the programs in effect to maintain the natural beauty of the State. In commenting on the events which you outline in your communication to Superintendent Rutter of the State Police, who, incidentally, has retired from the service, I want you to know that I have reviewed the reports covering the matter and have arrived at the conclusion that the "littering" which offended you was accidental in nature./ Several weeks have been consumed in looking into this matter. I regret that this delay was unavoidable. Sincerely yours". Democrat Richard J. Hughes (1909-1992) made the climb from New Jersey's federal prosecutor, to county court judge form 1948-1952, to a superior court judge from 1952-1961. In 1962, Hughes was elected Governor of New Jersey, a position he would hold for two terms, and then in 1973 was elected New Jersey's Supreme Court Chief Justice, the only person to have served both positions. A very prominent national politician, Hughes obtained the 1964 Democratic National Convention to take place in Atlantic City, New Jersey, as well as was a serious consideration to be Hubert Humphrey's running mate in 1968. Normal mailing folds. Toned. Corners rounded. Lightly creased throughout. Otherwise, fine condition.
