Robert Theodore Stafford (1913-2006) was an American politician who in his lengthy career of 34 consecutive years served as the 71st Governor of Vermont, a United States Representative and a U.S. Senator. A Northeastern Republican, he was generally considered a liberal or "Rockefeller" Republican. He is best remembered for his staunch environmentalism, his efforts and work on higher education and his support, as an elder statesman, for the 2000 Vermont law legalizing civil unions for gay couples. He did not seek reelection in 1988. A new Professorship of Public Policy at Middlebury College is named for Robert and HELEN STAFFORD, who met there in the 1930s.DIRECTLY FROM THE SALE OF THE ESTATE OF DANIEL PATRICK MOYNIHAN.
