Signature: "Thomas E. Dewey", 3¼x1½. Typed sentiment, "Sincerely yours", above signature. Accompanied by 4¾x3¼ embossed New York Governor's card to which signature was previously affixed. From 1931 to 1933, Dewey (1902-1971) served as Chief Assistant to the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York and then as U.S. Attorney. Although Dewey was a Republican, New York's Democratic Governor, Herbert H. Lehman, appointed him Special Prosecutor to root out racketeering in 1935. In 1937, he was elected District Attorney of New York County. Dewey's successful prosecution of the criminal syndicate Murder, Inc. brought him national fame. In 1938, Dewey ran for Governor against Lehman but lost. In 1942, Dewey was elected Governor of New York, serving from 1943-1954. Running for President against Franklin Roosevelt in 1944, Dewey received a larger share of the popular vote (45.9%) and more Electoral Votes (99) than any of FDR's Republican opponents in the three previous races. Favored to win the 1948 presidential election, however, Dewey lost to President Truman. Signature slip has pinhead sized stain at left edge. Remnants of mounting adhesive show through at signature. Card has stains in upper left, where signature was affixed, and in lower right, where another (now absent) item was attached.
