WENDELL H. FORD
A letter from the Governor to a fan, stating that his favorite saying (at the
time) is "When the going gets tough, the tough get going"
Typed Letter Signed: "Wendell Ford" as U.S. Senator, ¾p, 6¼x9.
Washington, D.C. 1979 March 14. On United States Senate letterhead to Mr.
Paul Friscat, North Canton, Ohio. In full: "Every week I read
something and wish I had said it, and, likewise, I'd probably have a different
'favorite' if you asked me the same time next year for a saying that meant a
lot to me. But for right now, I find myself strongly agreeing with the adage
that 'when the going gets tough, the tough get going.' Thank you for
writing. I'm always glad to hear from our good northern neighbors." At
the time of this letter, Ford was on two Senate committees: Commerce,
Science, and Transportation and Energy and Natural Resources. Democrat
Wendell H. Ford (1924-2015), a veteran of WWII, served in the Kentucky
state senate (1965-1967) and as the state's Lieutenant Governor
(1967-1971) before being elected Governor of Kentucky (1971-1974). He was
then a U.S. Senator from Kentucky from 1974-1999, serving as
Democratic Whip from 1991-1999. Lightly creased with folds, not at
signature. Lower left blank corner chipped away. Fine
