The Connecticut Governor thanks an associate in the Hartford Chamber
of Commerce for birthday wishes.
Typed Letter Signed: "W.L. Cross" as Governor of
Connecticut, 1p, 8½x11. Hartford, Connecticut, April 12, 1933. To Mr.
C.B. Whittelsey, Hartford Chamber of Commerce. In full: "You have my
best thanks for the congratulations on a birthday which, I hope, may be repeated
a few times more! Your most sincerely." Wilbur L. Cross (1862-1948),
Dean of the Yale Law School (1916-1930) and Editor of the "Yale
Review" (1911-1940), was Governor of Connecticut from 1931-1939.
Originally from Mansfield, Cross graduated from Yale University in 1885,
later earning his Ph.D. in English literature in 1889. An educator, he taught in
high schools and was principal before earning a professorial position at Yale.
While a professor he published several books, including Life and Times
of Laurence Sterne (1909) and The History of Henry Fielding (1918).
In his honor, Yale named the Wilber L. Cross Medal for outstanding
achievement in professional life. Normal mailing folds. Fine
