To "Dear Cheechako", in full: "'Cheechako' means a newcomer to Alaska, and although we may be a bit premature in calling you a 'Cheechako,' we sincerely hope some day you will find your way to our beautiful state where you will find a warm and hospitable welcome. William Allen Egan (1914-1984), a territorial legislator from 1940 and a former mayor of Valdez, played a key role in drafting Alaska's Constitution and became its first Governor (1959-1964).
