Small slip of ruled paper signed "Yours Truly" by William
Buckingham, Governor of Connecticut during the American Civil War
Autograph sentiment signed "Yours Truly/WmABuckingham". 5x2½
ruled paper. William Buckingham (1804-1875) was Governor
of Connecticut during the American Civil War (1858-1866). A strong supporter
of Abraham Lincoln, he hosted Lincoln when Lincoln campaigned in Connecticut,
and a personal friendship formed between them. After leaving office, he was
elected to the U.S. Senate on March 4, 1869, as a Republican, and
served until 1875. Earlier Buckingham was the Mayor of Norwich,
Connecticut as a Whig from 1849-1850 and again 1856-1857. The ship USS
Governor Buckingham is named after him. Lightly toned and creased. Signature is
lightly smeared in places but is legible. Show-through from mounting remnants on
verso (does not touch signature). Irregular right and bottom edges. Otherwise in
fine condition.
