Typed Letter Signed: "William Donald Schaefer" as Mayor of Baltimore, 1p, 8½x11. Baltimore, Maryland, 1979 October 25. On his official letterhead to Miss Toni Currin, Dillon, South Carolina. In full: "Our thanks for your thoughtfulness in sending us the clipping from the News American. We are particularly gratified that a resident of South Caroliina keeps up with what's happening in our city. My administration has as its top priority shaping a better Baltimore, so it is gratifying to hear your appreciation of our efforts. Please consider this an invitation to visit Baltimore and learn first-hand why 'Baltimore is Best.' Sincerely". William Donald Schaefer (1921-2011) was Mayor of Baltimore, Maryland from 1971-1987. A Democrat, he then served as Governor (1987-1995) and Comptroller of Maryland (1999-2007). Schaefer, who had gotten his start in politics in the Baltimore City Council, was credited with a number of accomplishments, but he is also remembered for his controversial remarks on such subjects as women, people with AIDS and immigrants who couldn't speak English. Slightly creased with folds, lower horizontal fold underlines signature. Stray ink mark beneath last line of type. Fine condition.
