WINTHROP ROCKEFELLER
Signed typed letter responding to a collector in New York City.
Typed letter signed: "W Rockefeller" as Governor of Arkansas, 1p, 8½x11. Little Rock, Arkansas, 1969 January 3. On State of Arkansas, Office of the Governor letterhead to Mr. Eugene Miller, New York, New York. In full: "Thank you for your letter of December 30th. I am enclosing the autographed First Day Cover as you requested and I appreciate your interest. With all good wishes, Sincerely". Enclosure not present. Winthrop Rockefeller (1912-1973), the grandson of John D. Rockefeller, Sr. and the brother of Nelson Rockefeller, served as Governor of Arkansas from 1967-1971. The first Republican Governor of the state since Reconstruction, Winthrop and his brother became the first brothers to simultaneously serve as Governors (Nelson was Governor of New York from 1959-1973). In 1968, the Rockefellers scored another first, becoming the first brothers to receive nominations for President at a major Party convention. Winthrop, whose last act as Governor was to commute the sentences of all the state's prisoners on death row, continued to make his influence felt through his Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation. Slightly creased with folds, lower horizontal fold at the lower loop of the "f" in Rockefeller. Three file nicks at blank left edge. Fine condition.
