GRACE CUNARD
Vintage 6x8 photo of Universal's "serial queen" of the silent
era
Photograph signed: "Sincerely/Grace Cunard". Sepia, 6x8.
Grace Cunard (1893-1967), born Harriet Jeffries, made her first silent
film in 1910. In an era when studios expected their employees to fill
multiple roles, Cunard continued to act while writing 100 screenplays, directing
11 films and producing two, between 1914 and 1921. Acting was her forte,
however, and beginning in 1914 she starred in a series of successful serials
for Universal: Lucille Love, Girl of Mystery, The Broken Coin
and Peg o' the Ring, among others. She acquired the moniker "Queen of
the Serials." Her roles diminished as she grew older, but Cunard remained in
films, mostly serials, until 1946. Her second marriage, from 1925 until her
death, was to stuntman Jack Shannon. ½-inch tear at right edge. Two ¾-inch tears
at left edge. Lightly creased. Lightly worn at edges. Otherwise, fine condition.
