GRACE LIVINGSTON "MARCIA MACDONALD" HILL
The Christian romance author signs this letter to a Reverend explaining that her response was delayed due to serious illness in the family
Autograph letter signed: "Grace Livingston Hill" in black ink. 2 pages, 5x6¼. Lancaster, New Hampshire, May 9, 1924. Written on personal letterhead to Rev. Anthony R. Parshley. In full: "My dear Mr. Parshley; I must ask your pardon for my long delay in replying to your request. Serious illness in my family has taken all my time and energy and made it impossible to keep up with my correspondence- I count it an honor to be among your list of noted ones and am glad to send you my autograph- I am Very sincerely". Grace Livingston Hill (1865-1947) was an early 20th-century novelist who wrote both under her real name and the pseudonym Marcia Macdonald. She wrote over 100 novels and many short stories. Hill's first novel The Esselstynes, or Alphonso and Marguerite (1887) was written to fund a vacation for her family. Her subsequent works were mostly written to provide income after her first husband died. The characters in her stories were most often young Christian women or those who become so within the confines of the story. Hill's publishers removed overt references to religious themes until they realized the popularity of her books, and then left them in. The last Grace Livingston Hill book, Mary Arden, was finished by her daughter Ruth Livingston Hill and published in 1947. Toned. Corners rounded. Horizontal fold across center. Second page and original envelope are affixed to backing sheet. Otherwise, fine condition.
