GRACE MOORE
Vintage sepia photograph of the opera singer in a white shirt and hat
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Frank Stuseh/Very best wishes/Grace Moore". Sepia, 8x10. Photograph by Hurrell/M.G.M. (photographer's name embossed at lower right margin and stamped on verso). Grace Moore (1898-1947), born Mary Willie Grace Moore, was a lyrical soprano who starred at the Metropolitan Opera. Moore starred in two M-G-M films of the early 1930s before she was fired when she put on too much weight. After Columbia hired her, and Moore, who was dubbed "The Tennessee Nightengale", helped popularize opera in a string of successful productions, including One Night of Love (1934), for which she was nominated for a Best Actress Academy Award. Moore was killed in a plane crash over Copenhagen during a European concert tour in 1947. She was 46. Lightly creased and soiled at blank margins. Minor surface creases and scratches (not evident head on), light horizontal scratch just nicks chin. Mounting remnants and pencil note (unknown hand) on verso, which is lightly soiled (no show through). Overall, fine condition.
