GEORGE BURNS and GRACIE ALLEN
Ink signatures from the Vaudeville comedian team
Signatures: "Gracie Allen", "George Burns", 6x4¼album leaf. GEORGE BURNS
(1896-1996) was a struggling vaudeville comedian when he met GRACIE ALLEN
(1895-1964), who thought she had left show business for a secretarial career. Together, they
became one of America's most beloved comedy teams, with Burns writing the lines and
playing the straight man, and Allen getting the laughs. They debuted on radio in 1931. A
string of comedy films followed over the next decade. Their popular TV show, The George
Burns and Gracie Allen Show, ran for eight years (1950-1958) until Gracie's retirement.
Less successful at first without Gracie, Burns enjoyed a new period of success in a series of
films beginning with The Sunshine Boys (1975), for which he won the Oscar as Best
Supporting Actor. The octogenarian even played God for laughs in a series of films beginning
with Oh, God (1977). Binding hold at left edge. Lightly toned around edges. Otherwise, fine
condition.
