GRACIE ALLEN She signed this check payable to Elizabeth Parsons for $5.30 in 1943. Partly Printed Check signed: "Grace Allen Burns", 6½x2¾. Hollywood, Calif., 1943 May 18. Drawn on the joint account of "George N. Burns and Grace Allen Burns", Bank of America, payable to "Elizabeth Parsons" for $5.30. Endorsed on verso: "Elizabeth Parsons". In 1922, George Burns (1896-1996) was a struggling vaudeville comedian when he met GRACIE ALLEN (1895-1964), who thought she had left show business for a secretarial career. Together, they became one of America's most beloved comedy teams, with Burns writing the lines and playing the straight man, and Allen getting the laughs. They debuted on radio in 1931. A string of comedy films followed over the next decade. Their popular TV show, The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show, ran for eight years (1950-1958) until Gracie's retirement. Less successful at first without Gracie, Burns enjoyed a new period of success in a series of films beginning with The Sunshine Boys (1975), for which he won the Oscar as Best Supporting Actor. The octogenarian even played God for laughs in a series of films beginning with Oh, God (1977). An Elizabeth Parsons wrote short stories in this period, published in The New Yorker and elsewhere. Her "Nightingales Sing" appeared in several anthologies. Was this check written to that Elizabeth Parsons, perhaps for material used in the Burns and Allen radio program? Further research might be merited. Bank cancellation holes, not at signature. Bank stamp on verso lightly shows through. Overall, fine condition.
