GRACIE BARRIE
Inscribed photo, wearing a blouse decorated with hearts, obtained in 1936
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Mush/Fondly/Gracie Barrie". B/w, 8x10. Photograph by Maurice Seymour, Chicago (imprint at lower right margin). Identifying ink notes (unknown hand) on verso note that this autograph was obtained at "Paramount Stage Door/Wed. May 6, 1936". Signed two months after one of her Broadway musicals ended and seven months before she appeared in another musical on the Great White Way. Vocalist Gracie Barrie, the sister of bandleader Dick Barrie, sang with Abe Lyman's Orchestra before marrying saxophonist and bandleader Dick Stabile and singing with his band. In 1942, after Stabile was drafted, Barrie headed the band herself, and she became a solo performer following the couple's post-war divorce. Barrie appeared in four Broadway musicals: Strike Me Pink (1933), George White's Scandals [1935] (1935-1936), The Show is On (1936-1937) and Crazy With the Heat (1941), and she made two appearances on TV's Toast of the Town (1949). Lightly creased and rippled at upper margin. Slightly creased at lower corners. Lightly soiled at blank margins and on verso, pinhead-size spot at lower margin. Overall, fine condition.
