GRAF von ZEPPELIN. ALS: "Graf Zeppelin", 1½p, 5½x8¾, front and verso. Stuttgart, 1883 February 25. Unnamed recipient. In German, translated. In full: "I have the honor to send the finally received prints along with the original sketch and the pictures kindly offered on approval with obedient thanks. I will take with greatest gratitude the very pleasing offer to arrange the coloring of one of the prints by Mr. Hofmann. The 2nd print perhaps has some value to yourself; a third I have had made for myself. With kind greetings." In 1891, Ferdinand, Count von Zeppelin (1838-1917) retired from the Prussian Army to devote himself to the building of motor-driven airships. He invented the first rigid airship in 1900 and in 1906 built one that had a speed of 30 miles per hour. In 1908, Zeppelin established at Friederichshafen the Zeppelin Foundation for the development of aerial navigation and the manufacture of airships. Lightly creased. Light show through of ink. Fine condition.
