GRAND ADMIRAL KARL DÖNITZ
Karl Dönitz sends an autograph letter regarding contacting Rudolf Hess.
Autograph Letter Signed: "Dönitz", 2p, 8¼x5¾. Aumühle, Germany, 1979 March 20. To Randall Sutherland. In German, fully translated: "My thanks for your letter of March the 6th! Enclosed 2 photos, signed on the back, because writing on the front wouldn't be visible. I have also signed both of the documents although you wrote both times "Grobadmiral' [Grossadmiral=Great Admiral]. I have contact with the son of Rudolf Hess, but not with his father in Spandau because this would only be disadvantageous. If you have additional wishes, please write to me". DÖNITZ was the head of the German Navy from 1943-1945. He succeeded Hitler as Führer. HESS was Deputy Führer and considered to be the number three man in Hitler's Germany after Göring. Dönitz and Hess were found guilty at Nuremberg. Dönitz served ten years and died in 1980 at 89. Hess, sentenced to life, died at Spandau in 1987 at the age of 92; it was said to be suicide. Light paper clip stain at upper blank margin. Fine condition.
