Both sign a postmarked souvenir copy of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Souvenir Printed DS: "Dönitz/18.3.70" and "Montgomery of Alamein/F.M.", 1 page, 8¼x11. Text of the "Universal Declaration of Human Rights" adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations on December 10, 1948. On parchment-like paper. Affixed at the lower margin is a 6-cent stamp issued by the United Nations commemorating 1968 as the International Year for Human Rights, postmarked United Nations, New York, November 22, 1968, first day of issue. MONTGOMERY had driven Rommel's forces from Egypt, Libya and Tripolitania in an offensive that began at el-Alamein in November 1942. He commanded the British forces in the invasion of Normandy on D-Day. DÖNITZ commanded the German Navy (1943-1945) and was named by Hitler as his successor. As Führer, Dönitz ordered the surrender of all German forces ending the war in Europe. On May 4, 1945, Dönitz sent envoys to Montgomery's headquarters at Luneburg Heath, and they agreed on the surrender of German forces in Holland, Denmark and north Germany. The surrender took effect at 8 A.M., May 5, 1945. Enemies in WWII, each has signed this document recognizing "the inherent dignity and the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family". One-fourth-inch triangular cut at lower blank edge beneath first "N" of "UNITED NATIONS." Fine condition.
