"THE FUEHRER HAS NOMINATED ME AS HIS SUCCESSOR...." FIVE DAYS LATER, FUEHRER DÖNITZ ORDERED THE SURRENDER OF GERMANY TO GENERAL EISENHOWER
GRAND ADMIRAL KARL DÖNITZ
Typescript signed: "Karl Dönitz/29.3.76", 1p, 8½x11. In English. In full: "To the German People - May 1, 1945. The Fuehrer has nominated me as his successor. In full consciousness of my responsibilities, I therefore assume leadership of the German people at this fateful hour. My task is to save the German men and women from destruction by the advancing Bolshevist enemy. It is to serve this purpose alone that the military struggle continues. For as long as the British and the Americans continue to impede the accomplishment of this task, we must also continue to fight and defend ourselves against them. The British and the Americans in that case will not be fighting in the interests of their own people, but solely for the expanse of Bolshevism in Europe." His next address to the German people was on May 8th, exactly one week later. He began: "When I addressed the German nation on May 1 telling it that the Fuehrer had appointed me his successor, I said that my foremost task was to save the lives of the German people. In order to achieve this goal, I ordered the German High Command during the night of May 6-7 to sign the unconditional surrender for all fronts." At Nuremberg, Grand Admiral Karl Dönitz was sentenced to ten years. Germany's last Führer usually signed with just his last name; a full signature is rare. Fine condition.
