Typescript signed: "Dönitz/27.7.76", 1p, 8½x11. Headed: "Order of the Day/May 1, 1945". English translation of Dönitz's address to the German people on the day after Hitler committed suicide. In part: "The Fuehrer has fallen. Faithful to his great ideal to save the nations of Europe from Bolshevism, he has given his life and has met a hero's death...The Fuehrer has designated me to be the head of state and supreme commander. I am resolved to continue the struggle against the Bolsheviks, against the British and Americans...." Grand Admiral of the German Navy in WWII, Dönitz was named by Hitler as his successor. As Führer, he ordered the German surrender just five days after this address. Dönitz was sentenced at Nuremberg to ten years imprisonment. Shaded, lightly creased top edge. Fine condition.
