GRAND ADMIRAL KARL DÖNITZ
Typescript signed: "Dönitz/9.10.74", 1 p, 8½x11. Text of Dönitz's Declaration to the Members of the Armed Forces, May 1, 1945. In full: "I expect discipline and obedience. Chaos and ruin can be prevented only by the swift and unreserved execution of my orders. Anyone who at this juncture fails in his duty and condemns German women and children to slavery and death is a traitor and a coward. The oath of allegiance which you took to the Fuehrer now binds each and every one of you to me, whom he himself appointed as his successor." During WWII, Admiral Dönitz developed the idea of fighting in wolf packs. In January 1943, Hitler replaced Erich Raeder with Dönitz as Commander in Chief of the German Navy. Dönitz gave permission for a radically improved U-boat to be built in 1944. Working closely with Albert Speer, the Minister of Armaments, Germany was producing 42 of these all-electric boats a month by 1945. However, they were too late to make an impact on the outcome of the war. As the war was coming to a close, Hitler selected Dönitz to succeed him as Führer. After forming a new government, Führer Döenitz negotiated Germany's surrender on May 8, 1945. At the Nuremberg War Crimes Trials, Dönitz was found guilty of war crimes and was sentenced to ten years in prison. He was 79 when he died on Christmas Eve in 1980. Fine condition.
